The Famous Seiko SKX007

Over the years, there's one watch that is very popular among automatic watch fans. That watch is the Seiko SKX007, an older model by Seiko.

When I first encountered the watch in a few forums, I was a bit surprised at how out-of-ordinary the watch is. It has a peculiar design, thanks to the older styling applied on it.

Regardless of that, the watch continues to be heralded as a gold standard for affordable automatic watches, even for those that usually buy a more expensive watches

Well, that's the charm of the watch. It's very affordable - usually around $200 apiece but can be had for lower than that if you have the patience to wait for the price to drop. Automatic watch fans will know that $200 is a great bargain price for a fully functioning automatic watch.

In addition, the watch is also a dive watch, with a huge 200 m water resistance. Again, with that kind of price, the Seiko SKX007 is a legit steal for having this kind of water resistance.

Perhaps I should mention that the SKX007 is part of the Seiko SKX dive watches family. It comprises of a few models such as this SKX007, SKX009 (blue-black pepsi color), SKX013 (smaller size) and others.

One thing for sure is these SKX watches sell very well - so much so that Seiko is still currently producing and selling these watches even after 20 years of its inception. Now that says a lot from a brand that is infamous for culling their best selling/looking watches.

Here's a bit of technical specification of the Seiko SKX007 (source):

  • Watch Diameter: 42 mm
  • Watch Thickness: 13 mm
  • Watch Casing Material: Stainless steel
  • Watch strap: Stainless steel bracelet or rubber band
  • Watch Dial: Black
  • Dial Window: Hardlex crystal
  • Watch Bezel: Unidirectional diving bezel
  • Watch Movement: Seiko 7S26 automatic self-wind movement
  • Water Resistance: 200 m

So what do I think about the SKX007?

To cut it short, I'm a bit on the fence about the watch. True, the watch's price is very enticing, especially when looking at its great specifications (200 m water resistance, true dive watch, automatic movement, etc.).

But the dial design with a dated styling is a something that's holding me back. Though I've got to admit that over the years I've warmed up to the watch, thanks to lots of exposure in various watch forums and FB groups that I'm in.

Perhaps I'll pull the trigger on the SKX007 in the future? Maybe. But before that, tell me what do you think about this watch? Drop your comments below =)
